Dr. Morrison asked open ended questions about Kristen’s family history and sexuality. She did not
express surprise or judgement towards Kristen’s sexuality, health literacy or lack of familiarity with
medical terms. In fact, Dr. Morrison offered to review health information with Kristen to ensure
understanding. Asking about stress and offering to provide resources for employment and counseling
services is important to building trust in the doctor-patient relationship and increases the likelihood that
Kristen will confide and accept needed help in the future.
